50th Anniversary

Murphy’s Legacy

by | Sep 4, 2023

In September 1973, Ruth Murphy opened Murphy Manor Antiques, what has become Murphy’s Furniture. As with any great start-up, what began in the basement of the family home evolved into Murphy’s Furniture. Ruth’s “little home-based business” quickly outgrew their historic southeast Hillsboro home, branching out to a new location, Hillsboro Nostalgia Center on Main Street in Hillsboro.

Ruth’s brainchild quickly burst its seams and relocated to the east side of Hillsboro, on TV Highway. Ruth added unfinished furniture in the late 70’s and even experimented with a paint department and flooring center in the early and mid-80’s. After a brief stint at a location on Baseline at 2nd in Hillsboro, Ruth decided the only way to provide a solid location for Murphy’s was to own the store’s property.

In 1986, Ruth took the leap; Murphy’s moved to its current location at 2962 E. Baseline in Cornelius. It was at this location that upholstered and finished furniture were added to Murphy’s product selection. Other additional locations were tested (Tillamook, Gresham, SE Portland) but the westside has always provided Murphy’s perfect homebase.

Though Ruth passed suddenly in September 2001, the Murphy family has been fortunate enough to continue Ruth’s legacy, largely because of the undaunted support of our local community. To this day, we remain true to Ruth’s mission statement: quality wood and upholstered furniture at the lowest possible price, where the customer is always our #1 priority. Come help Murphy’s Furniture celebrate our 50th anniversary the entire month of September, with savings storewide!
