Think Small for New Years

by | Dec 20, 2023

Tired of setting the same old new year’s resolution? Ready for a change that will improve your outlook, spread goodwill to others and possibly save you time and money? My 2024 new year’s resolution? It’s time to think small, baby!

According to the Census bureau, the average home size has increased from 1,000 square feet in 1950 to over 2,500 square feet in 2018. Yet the average family size has slightly decreased. Many of us have taken that space and filled it with stuff. Tips to help downsize are below

Start with 1 area/room at a time. It’s easier to work with smaller, attainable chunks. Adopt the 1-year rule. If it’s dusty or not used in a year, it may be time to give it a new home

Create a maybe pile to avoid feelings of regret. This takes the pressure off. Instead make a maybe/donate bin and drop off once a month

Don’t save items for a garage sale unless you really love garage sales. Unless your g-sale is next weekend there is a strong possibility you will be storing those items, but donations made now will be put to immediate good use.

Once you are done, group likes with likes to avoid buying duplicate. Consider a pantry or bookcase with baskets. Use the label-maker for baskets to give a specific home to regular use items. Then, use the 1 in 1 out rule.
